What is a Specialist Wellness Counsellor?
A Specialist Wellness Counsellor is registered with the ASCHP and has obtained an honours degree in Psychology. They are required to have had supervised practical experience and may be required to write a board exam. These counsellors also see clients for topics such as relationship, trauma and individual counselling. ASCHP counsellors work under the holistic counselling approach, whereby counselling is seen as comprising of an individual’s mental, emotional, physical, financial, relational and spiritual needs. A specialist wellness counsellor, therefore, provides support and guidance to individuals dealing with various physical, emotional, and mental health concerns related to their overall well-being. The counsellor may specialize in areas such as addiction, stress management, anxiety, depression management and self-care. This type of counsellor uses various techniques to help clients improve their overall well-being, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques, talk therapy and many others.
What is the ASCHP?
The Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners (ASCHP) represents a community of South African practitioners who work in the healthcare field. ASCHP is a regulatory body that sets standards of professional practice and ethical behaviour for practitioners in the field of wellness counselling, holistic health, and other related professions. Therefore, a specialist wellness counsellor in South Africa who is part of ASCHP is a practitioner who is recognized for their ethical and professional approach to the counselling profession.
